KPD collects nearly 200 pounds of prescription drugs during
Drug Take Back Day
LĪHU'E – The Kaua'i Police Department collected 196 pounds in unused or expired
prescription medications and other drugs during its 13th annual Drug Take Back Day on
Saturday, April 29th.
“Abuse of prescription medication is a growing concern both nationally and right here at
home,” stated Kaua‘i Police Chief Darryl D. Perry. “Drug Take Back Day is one way our law
enforcement agencies can work together with our community to combat this problem. By
properly disposing of your unused or expired medications in a timely manner, we can help to
keep these drugs out of the wrong hands.”
The Kaua`i Police Department thanks the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA), Life’s
Choices Kaua‘i, and volunteers from the Kaua‘i District Health Office, the Kaua‘i Police
Department and the Kauai Medical Reserves Corps, for their assistance in coordinating this
event.
Drug Take Back Day is part of a national initiative led by U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency
(DEA), which focuses on providing a safe, convenient, and responsible method of disposing of
medications, while also educating the community about the potential for abuse and
consequences of improper storage and disposal. DEA and law enforcement are authorized
agencies to collect and dispose of the controlled substances.
For more information on the National Take Back Initiative, please visit the DEA’s website
at www.dea.gov, or contact Lt. James Rodriguez with the Kaua'i Police Department at 241-
1701, or Theresa Koki of Life’s Choices, 241-4925.
