Managing Director KAUA‘I POLICE DEPARTMENT News Release For Immediate Release: May 25, 2017 DARRYL PERRY, CHIEF Tel (808) 241-1600 Fax (808) 241-1604 KPD seeking participants for upcoming Citizens Police Academy LĪHU'E – The Kaua'i Police Department is seeking applicants for its upcoming Citizens Police Academy, an interactive program designed to give residents a hands-on look into the police department and the criminal justice system. “The Citizens Police Academy is consistent with our mission to improve transparency and build a stronger relationship with our community,” stated Kaua'i Police Chief Darryl Perry. “While the program is modeled after a police academy, it is not intended to be a citizens patrol group or an offer of employment. It simply gives people a better understanding of the demands and challenges of police work, and the culture of law enforcement.” Classes are free and set to begin in June, but an exact start date will be determined once applications are received. The 13-week program combines both classroom and field instruction, which allows participants to better understand the role of a police officer. Most classes will be held at KPD Headquarters in Līhu'e, but the program will also include a visit to the Kīpū Pistol Range, a police ride-along, and other off-site classes as needed. Weekly sessions will focus on various topics, including: an overview of law enforcement and criminal justice; firearms; crime scenes; domestic violence disputes; special units; and community policing. Applications for the academy are now available at Ka Hale Maka‘i o Kaua'i, Līhu'e Headquarters located at 3990 Ka‘ana Street, Suite 200; or under the “Online Forms” section of the KPD website, www.kauai.gov/police. Academy hopefuls must be Kaua'i residents at least 18 years of age with a valid driver’s license, who have never been convicted of a felony or domestic violence offense, had a DUI conviction in the past three years, or a petty misdemeanor conviction in the past five years. Dedication is also required, as participants must attend at least 11 of the 13 courses in order to graduate from the academy in the fall. For more information on the Citizens Police Academy, visit www.kauai.gov/police or call Lt. Rod Green at 241-1907. ###
