UPDATE: Kūhiō Highway in the vicinity of Hanalei Bridge closed HANALEI – Kūhiō Highway, in the vicinity of the Hanalei Bridge, is closed until further notice due to flooding. A Flash Flood Warning for the island of Kaua‘i continues to be in effect through 5 p.m. The warning may be extended, dropped or modified as conditions develop. The American Red Cross has opened a shelter at Hanalei Elementary School. Officials report a downed tree over Kūhiō Highway at Lumaha'i. Personnel from the state Department of Transportation are responding. Kaua‘i Island Utility Cooperative has also reported localized power outages throughout the island. KIUC crews are working to restore power as quickly as possible. Hā'ena and Kē'ē beaches are closed to swimming, and Grove Farm has closed the access road to Māhāʻulepū until further notice due to hazardous conditions. Officials are reporting heavy ponding, low visibility and other hazardous driving conditions across the island. Motorists are advised to drive with extreme caution. A Flash Flood Warning means flash flooding is imminent or occurring in streams, roads and low-lying areas. Do not cross fast-flowing or rising water in your vehicle or on foot.
