Chief s Monthly
Overview for the month of May 2018 and pertinent updates

Pertinent
Chief Westerman highlighted departmental activities as noted in his report dated June
updates
20, particularly his attendance to the Kauai Rural Health Association Opioid Crisis
Conference and the flood response debriefing meeting. A blessing ceremony was
held for the new Nukumoi Lifeguard Tower at Po`ipu Beach Park. A fire prevention
meeting was held with the producers of the film "Jungle Cruise" to talk about what
the set would look like and how safe it would be to enable the film production to use
pyrotechnics, but, thanks to the environmentalist, very little pyrotechnics were used
because of the location. Lastly, both Chief Westerman and Deputy Fire Chief
Vaughan, along with Mayor Carvalho and other community representatives, held
numerous community meetings for the people who were affected by the
unprecedented flood in April.

The Operations Bureau
Medical calls were up 300 calls for the year. One structural fire. Fifteen vehicle
accident calls. Four vehicle fire calls. Eight brush fire calls. Seven calls for rescue.
Thirty-seven cancelled in route.
The total calls for Fiscal Year 2017-2018 were 6,174, up from the 2016-2017 Fiscal
Year of 6,054 calls.
Training Bureau
There were 2 on -island training sessions that were held for 7 personnel in the Kauai
Fire Department for a total of 42 hours, and 28 training sessions that were held for 13
new recruits for a total of 1,873 hours.
The Ocean Safety Bureau
Two trainings were held: one for iPad Software training and the second for Junior
Lifeguard Instructor training. The Ke`e Beach Tower in Ha`ena was closed because
the road leading up to Ke`e Beach needed to be repaired in certain areas, but that did
not deter the public from going to the beach. Thirty-two rescues were conducted in
the month of May of which five were Jet Ski rescues. Roving Patrol conducted two
Jet Ski rescues and one assist. No drownings reported in the month of May.
Prevention Bureau
Two Fire Investigations were conducted; one of which involved a vehicle fire and the
other an excavator fire. Five additional dwelling permits were issued and eleven
certificate of occupancy inspections were conducted.

Out of the budget, 91.67% has been expended, which leaves a remaining 8.33%
