BODY AND FENDER REPAIRER •

Duties Summary:
Straightens, mends and repairs motorized automotive and equipment bodies,
fenders, doors and other parts; prepares surfaces for paintings; paints cars, trucks and
other equipment; and performs other related duties as required.
Distinguishing Characteristics:
This is a journey level class performing skilled body and fender work on automotive
equipment.
This class differs from that of the Automotive Mechanic in that the Body and Fender
Repairer straightens and repairs automotive and truck bodies and fenders as a major work
assignment; whereas, the Automotive Mechanic overhauls and repairs engines and other
equipment as a major assignment and may occasionally perform automotive body and
fender work as an incidental work assignment.
This class differs from that of Welder in that the Body and Fender Repairer performs skilled
repair work on bodies and fenders of motorized equipment using oxyacetylene welding and
spray and brush painting equipment; whereas, the Welder performs skilled work with
oxyacetylene or electric welding equipment on a full -time basis.
Examples of Duties: (The following are examples of duties and are not necessarily
descriptive of any one position in this class. The omission of specific duties statements does
not preclude management from assigning such duties if such duties are logical assignment
for the position.)
• Inspects automotive and equipment bodies for dents and breaks;
• Removes and hammers out dented fenders;
• Files, fills dents and depressions, sands and resurfaces to repair dented and broken
fenders and body panels;
• Uses fiberglass to repair damaged fiberglass hoods and fenders;
• Removes and cuts out rusted sections of bodies and fenders;
• Fabricates and installs new sections;
• Removes rust and applies rust preventative chemicals on vehicles and equipment;

• Prepares rusted surfaces for painting;
• Welds and brazes breaks in body metal;
• Shrinks fenders and other panels to repair stretched metal;
• Straightens bumpers, grills, door panels, truck lids, running board moldings, body
moldings, hoods, cabs, bodies and hub caps;
• Straightens auto frames by using hydraulic presses and attachments;
• Cuts sheet metal to size and makes new door panels;
• Replaces door skins;
• Removes accessories such as door handles, chromium strips, antennas, and mirrors
prior to painting;
• Applies primer coat and one or more coats of acrylic lacquer, acrylic or synthetic
enamel, or 2 part paint systems (base coat -clear coat);
• Cuts stencils and paints identification numbers on vehicles and equipment;
• Applies decals on vehicles and equipment;
• Operates many different types of pneumatic and electric hand held tools (e.g.
Sanders, polishers, grinders, needle guns, sand blasters, shears, drills, ratchets, and
impact guns);
• Mixes and matches paint;
• Cleans and maintains welding and painting equipment;
• Keeps time and materials and work records; requisitions materials and supplies as
necessary;
• Keeps work area clean at all times;
• May supervise the work of helpers as assigned.

Minimum Qualification Requirements for the Class:
Training and Experience: A combination of education and experience substantially
equivalent to graduation from high school and two and one half years (2 1/2) years of
experience in body and fender repair work including or supplemented by oxyacetylene
welding and spray and brush painting of automotive vehicles and equipment.
Knowledge of: practices, tools, equipment and materials used for body and fender
repair work; electric, gas and arc welding (e.g. MIG, oxyacetylene and spot welding);
automotive body painting; methods of preparing and preserving painting materials and
equipment; occupational hazards and safety precautions applicable to this class.
Ability to: repair automotive and equipment bodies, fenders and doors; fabricate body
parts from sheet metal and fiberglass; perform electric, gas and arc welding (e.g. MIG,
oxyacetylene and spot welding), and cutting; apply paint smoothly with a spray gun; mix
paints and match colors; cut stencils; do mechanical work; keep records and prepare simple
reports; make estimates of labor and materials for body repair jobs; understand and follow
written and oral instructions.
Health and Physical Condition Requirements:
Persons seeking appointment to positions in this class must meet the health and
physical condition standards deemed necessary and proper for performance of the duties.

This is an amendment to the specification for the class, BODY AND FENDER
REPAIRER, which was approved and titled Body and Fender Repairman on June 1,
1970, and amended and retitled to Body and Fender Repairer on October 10, 1975
and on May 26, 2010, and is to be substituted for that specification.
