HomeMy WebLinkAbout8.055 CARPENTER 20190222DEPARTMENT OF HUMAN RESOURCES COUNTY OF KAUAI CARPENTER 8.055 BC -09, BU -01 Duties Summary: Performs skilled carpentry work in the construction, alteration, and repair of wooden articles and structures; and performs other related duties as required. Distinguishing Characteristics: This is the journeyman class in the Carpentry series. This class differs from that of Carpenter Helper in that the Carpenter performs skilled rough and finished carpentry work in the construction, alteration and repair of all types of wooden articles and structures including cabinet work; whereas the Carpenter Helper works under the supervision of a skilled carpenter performing a variety of manual tasks incidental to the work of the Carpenter or performs less difficult routine carpentry tasks independently. Examples of Duties: (The following are examples of duties and are not necessarily descriptive of any one position in this class. The omission of specific duties statements does not preclude management from assigning such duties if such duties are logical assignment for the position.) • Lays out, cuts, fits and assembles concrete forms, framework, ceilings, floors, walls, partitions, stairways, windows, doors interior and exterior trim, and other structural pa rts; • Constructs, alters, repairs and assembles wooden articles, structures and equipment such as cabinets, desks, chairs, counters, bulletin boards, tables and similar articles; • Removes and replaces floorings, ceilings, partitions, roofs, steps and other wooden structures; • Installs glass panes in doors and windows; • Installs and repairs hardware such as locks, door stops, hinges and door knobs; • Operates woodworking machinery such as planers, sanders, joiners, handsaws, drill press and other equipment in connection with carpentry work; • Builds and repairs water tanks, covered ramps, fences and other structures; • Estimates materials needed to complete a project; CARPENTER 2 8.055 Reads blueprints sketches and specifications to determine work to be done; lays out building foundation with transit, level and steel measuring tape; • May assign tasks to other carpenters and supervises the work of helpers; • May perform work in other building trades when not engaged in carpentry work. Minimum Qualification Requirements for the Class: Training and Experience:: A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to graduation from high school, and successful completion of apprenticeship training or two and one half (21/2) years of experience in carpentry work under a journeyman carpenter. Knowledge of: practices, tools, equipment, and materials used in the carpentry trade; qualities, uses, and adaptability of various woods; pertinent building codes; occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade. Ability to: operate a variety of woodworking machines and use the tools of the trade; read, interpret, and work from plans, blueprints, sketches, and working drawings; estimate labor and material requirements; rig and work from scaffolds and other high or difficult vantage points; plan assignments and direct the work of others; give and follow oral and written instructions. Health and Physical Condition: Persons seeking appointment to positions in this class must meet the health and physical condition standards deemed necessary and proper for performance of the duties. Physical Effort Grouping: Heavy This is an amendment to the specification for the class, CARPENTER, which was approved September 20, 1957 and amended on February 25, 1974, and is to be substituted for that specification.
