• Older Americans Month
Kaua'i celebrated Older Americans Month during May to recognize the
achievements and contributions of the Kupuna in our community. They take part
in activities that promote wellness and social connection. They share their
wisdom and experience with future generations and they give back to enrich their
communities.
This year's theme, Engage at Every Age emphasized the importance of being
active and involved, no matter where or when you are in life. You are never too
old (or too young) to participate in activities that enrich your physical, mental and
emotion well-being.
Eight Kupuna nominated by community organizations were honored at the
annual Older Americans Recognition Ceremony at the Kaua'i Beach Resort for
their significant contributions. Pictured standing with Mayor Bernard P. Carvalho
Jr. are Peter Rayno and Michael J. Vidinha. Seated: Sonia Song, Elvira Kimokeo,
Clorinda Nakashima, Martina A. Semana, Janice F. Nitta and Margaret McGinty.
Peter Rayno and Janice F. Nitta were recognized as the 2018 Male and Female
Outstanding Older Americans Kaua'i.

April 11, 2019
On Friday, May 11, 2018, the Agency on Elderly Affairs in partnership with
Kukui Grove Center hosted the inaugural Older Americans Festival. The
festival brought together representatives of resources on aging, volunteer
programs, activity programs, entertainment and a nice reason for Kupuna to
have a fun and enjoyable time. Kukui Grove Center merchants offered
discounts in celebration of Older Americans Month and there were plenty of
prize drawings for the Kupuna to enjoy.
• Honoring RSVP Volunteers
The annual recognition event held on Friday, December 14, 2018, at the
Kauai Beach Resort, had more than 275 attendees including volunteers,
volunteer station coordinators and elected officials.
RSVP volunteers recognized for 30 years of service, pictured above, Misao
Tamura, Kay Matsuwaki and Dorothy Higuchi. These volunteers are
respectively a centenarian and two nonagenarians. What an achievement for
these three individuals and an honor to have them continue serving with
RSVP. Honored guests standing from left are Kealoha Takahashi, Mayor
Derek S. K. Kawakami, Carrice Gardner, Kaulana Finn, Donna Olivas-Kaohi,
Gerald Ako, Council Chair Arryl Kaneshiro, Councilmembers Kipukai Kuali'i
and Felicia Cowden.
• Aging and Disability Resource Center (ADRC)
