2. MAJOR CHANGES AND/OR VARIANCES IN OPERATIONS BUDGET
FY 2020 Budget Requests:
• Increase funding for Other Services, Teen Court / Victim Services, by $5,000.
• Requesting funding to purchase six laptop computers for $15,000.
3. OPERATIONAL CHALLENGES
Other Services - Kaua‘i Teen Court Kaua‘i Teen Court has been a successful diversion program for juveniles between the ages of 10 and 18, allowing teenagers to attend a hearing where they are sanctioned by their peers. With new challenges on the horizon, such as the increase in teenage vaping, more cases are being referred to Kaua‘i Teen Court than ever before. In 2017, there were 186 total referrals. In 2018, there were 219 total referrals, representing an increase of or approximately 15%. Providing an additional $5,000 in funding will help to divert more cases for first time offenders away from the regular judicial system and instead through Teen Court.
Equipment – Laptop Computer Replacements In the past, OPA was able to utilize grant funding to purchase laptop computers, which are heavily utilized by Deputy Prosecuting Attorneys, Investigators and Victim Witness Advocates. Nearly all of the 11 grant laptops in our inventory have reached an expiration date. Grant funding is no longer available to purchase new laptop computers. We are requesting $15,000 for FY 19-20 to purchase six new laptop computers to be shared amongst our staff. 4. TOP 3 OPERATIONAL HIGHLIGHTS FROM FY 2019
1st Highlight: Achieved paperless work flow with Kaua‘i Police Department. All police reports and other documentation are automatically uploaded and shared through Spillman Technology Software, improving transmittal time and providing for expeditious processing.
2nd Highlight: Conviction and sentencing in Sandra Galas Case.
3rd Highlight: Maintained full attorney staffing with reduced turnover.
