Thank you so much for the invitation. Unfortunately, I have another commitment for that time, Laurel
just returned from Cuba and New York and Melissa is in the midst of producing an event happening
Saturday. I would very much like to speak with you about our event, so perhaps we can set up another
meeting or speak by phone.
We have some exciting new developments to tell you about since 1 last spoke with Randy. I will include
the information below. It looks it may be necessary for us to move to a larger venue.
Ester Solomon, a board member of the ACLU, let me know that you have some funds available for
supporting this kind of educational event and suggested we make a request for some financial support. I
would love to talk with you about that as the event is becoming more expensive than we initially
expected due to the expansion it is undergoing.
Nadya Wynd
(Please note toward the bottom of this description of the event you will find new information about
our confirmed speaker and also the TV filming and broadcast of our event).
Me Too and Beyond: Taking the Next Step
Tropicbird Entertainment is planning an event called: #Me Too and Beyond: Taking the Next
to Brno i eez r c a 9t Ql t 0al a481MdtSGh@&1-AVd tgium-1.6
Kauai. Tropicbird is non-profit entertainment company comprised of three women who are
producing live theater on Kauai. We are currently fundraising to produce Nobody's Boy, an
original, full-scale family musical, which offers timely messages about the value of home and
family, forgiveness and reconciliation and appreciating differences in culture, religion and
language. You can read more about the musical and Tropicbird Entertainment
here: h_q://tropicbirdentertainment.com/productions/coming-soon
Seventeen years ago, Nadya Wynd, one of the founding members of Tropicbird, wrote,
produced and directed The Beautifid Illusion, a 33 minute, narrative film that addresses the issue
of the sexual exploitation of actresses, as well as the attempt to forgive the seemingly
unforgivable.
Since the film business was especially then, and still is today, overwhelming populated by men,
it was challenging to get the film seen when she tried to market the film in 2000 and 2001. She
found, in general, women related to the film and it made men feel uncomfortable. It did appear in
a couple of film festivals (New York and Los Angeles Independent Film Festivals) and a woman
programmer aired it on PBS.
She was asked to screen it in Santa Cruz, California, as a fundraiser for a sexual abuse
organization. She agreed and donated all of the profits of the screening to the organization. The
most fulfilling part of this event for Nadya was when several sexual abuse "survivors" came up
to her after the screening and thanked her for making the film and told her how uncannily
accurate the portrayals in the film were.
Now that this issue has come to the forefront, we are planning a Kauai community event with a
screening of the film to start the conversation. After the screening, there will be a discussion with
a panel of experts addressing the issue of sexual misconduct, abuse of power, and how to change
the culture that supports the continuation of the problem. While we want to address the current
issues of sexual harassment and misconduct, we also want to present concrete solutions that will
help us all move into seeing the real crux of the issue — the abuse of power and the need for all
people to be treated with respect and dignity.
One of the keynote speakers will be Robert Works Fuller, an educational reformer, advisor
to presidents, citizen diplomat, physicist, futurist, prolific author, former president of Oberlin
College, and creator of the dignity movement. Fuller identifies rank -based abuses of power in his
book Somebodies and Nobodies and gives them a name—rankism. In his book All Rise, he
describes how societies can overcome rankism and promote universal dignity. He also co-
authored Dignity for All — a handbook for the Dignity Movement.
Fuller, who is based in Berkeley, California, has consulted with Indira Gandhi, met with Jimmy
Carter regarding the president's Commission on World Hunger, worked in the USSR to defuse
the Cold War, and keynoted a Dignity for All conference hosted by the president of Bangladesh.
Fuller's books on dignity and rankism have been published in India, Bangladesh, Korea, and
China, and featured in The New York Times, The Boston Globe, and O, The Oprah Magazine; the
NPR, C-Span, and the BBC; and in TED talks.
Here's some info on Robert: https:Hen.wikipedia.oriz/wiki/Robert W. Fuller And an article
about him: h=s://www.huffinZonpost.com/author/robertwfuller-991 Robert's
website: http://www.robertworksfuller.com/
What also makes this event very important is that Kim Spencer, an LA -based TV
producer at KCET and Founder of Link TV, will film the event for broadcast to 40 million
U.S. homes receiving satellite television on DIRECTV channel 375, DISH Network channel
9410 and in 11 Southern California counties on HD channel 28.
Link TV is an independent, non-commercial network devoted to providing a unique perspective
on international news, current events, and diverse cultures — presenting issues not often covered
in the US media. Its focus is on connecting American viewers with people at the heart of
breaking events, organizations in the forefront of social change and the cultures of an
increasingly global community. For more information, visit: https://www.linktv.ora/
We will also have a few more locally based speakers/panelists. We have been in contact with
and are currently waiting for a confirmation from Senator Mazie Horono.
Letter to the Editor
Sandra Galas, and her heartbreaking death, have been the subject of speculation and headlines
for many years now. This is due in large part to her parents and her brother's efforts to keep her
story alive to ensure she's never forgotten. To that end they have been extremely successful.
Sandra is once again in the news because her estranged husband recently plead no contest to
Assault i in connection with her death. While he is not claiming responsibility for her death,
conclusions can be dawn. What is important to highlight is that an abuser is finally being held
accountable for domestic violence. It is imperative that perpetrators of domestic violence crimes be
held fully responsible for their actions". What is equally important is that Sandy- the mother,
daughter, sister, and friend, is not forgotten. We must remember how precious and valuable her
life was, how all domestic violence victims are precious and valuable.
As a community, we cannot lose sight of how domestic violence affects us all. We have lost
other community members, like Sandy, and that loss is deeply felt. Obviously, not all domestic
violence ends this tragically, but the impact is still wide reaching and long lasting. Domestic
violence can occur in any relationship and takes many forms. Domestic violence does not
discriminate — it affects all races, ethnicities, religions, and socio-economic backgrounds. The
Center for Disease Control has identified domestic violence as a serious public health problem,
and it remains a daily threat to the health and well-being of women on Kaua'i.
The YWCA wants Kaua'i to know that victims do have a voice. You will be listened to and you
will be believed. The YWCA invites the community to join our efforts to end domestic violence.
Be another voice calling for full accountability for domestic violence perpetrators and don't
excuse their actions. Help a neighbor, friend or family member who is experiencing domestic
violence. Intervene by calling the police if you witness domestic violence or hear it happening
next door. Call our 24-hour crisis line 245-6362 for help or more information.
