Facebook (@HSCSW) the first state in the nation to pass Convention on the Elimination of all Forms
of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) legislation in every county.
CEDAW is the only international human rights treaty that focuses entirely on
ending discrimination against women. The United States is one of just six
countries in the world that failed to ratify the treaty. Passage at the local level
represents a proactive commitment by each county in Hawaii to evaluate
their programs and budgets to ensure they affect men and women equitably.
The effort began as part of the national Cities for CEDAW campaign.
Khara Jabola-Carolus, Executive Director of the State Commission, stated,
"Hawaii is reclaiming its role in leading the nation on women's issues. We
were the first state to legalize abortion, and our late Congressperson Patsy
Mink was the principle author of Title IX, which was renamed in her honor.
Now, we have become the first state to codify CEDAW in every county, and to codify Title IX into state law.
Despite the federal attacks, we've made this year historic for women."
The Hawaii State Commission on the Status of Women brought the largest delegation in its history to the
annual NACW conference, with representatives from Kauai, Maui, and Hawaii Island Commissions in
attendance. Khara Jabola-Carolus, Executive Director of the State Commission, was also elected to the national
board of the NACW.

Good morning Deputy Chief Michael Contrades,
I hope this email finds you well.
I am sending this on behalf of the Committee on the Status of Women regarding their annual
Breast Cancer Awareness Month Paint the Town Pink Walk that is coming up on Wednesday,
October 3, 2018.
In the past years the Kauai Police Department has kindly secured the walkers' safety along
Kuhio Highway from the County of Kaua'i Rotunda to Wilcox Hospital and back.
And so they are requesting the special services of KPD to escort them once again.
The walk is estimated to commence around 11:45 a.m. and they anticipate a crowd of about
30-40 walkers, although last year we estimated 70+!
I'm sending this well in advance of the event, so please do advise at your convenience.
