CSW 2018-13 Continued discussion and recap from Committee members who attended the National Association of Commissions for Women (NACW) 48 h Annual Conference held August 1-4, 2018, in Los Angeles, CA. 1Discussed 5116118, 6120118, 71181181 Ms. Valente shared that the conference inspired and equipped her with ideas on ways to engage with young women in the community. She came away with notes on how sports developed leadership and awareness of strengths. Ms. Valente believed that they are all in a position to contribute in some way and it was very important to expose events and bring awareness to situations that are happening abroad and outside of this community. She entertained the idea of organizing a women's leadership series that would connect women leaders with young women and suggested the Committee invite one or two student representatives from each school to be part of the discussion during the planning of Career Day. She felt it was important to gather their ideas on how this event could help and benefit themselves. Ms. Ignacio-Neumiller said the conference was rewarding and encouraged members who have not gone to consider attending next year, once the location is determined. Her takeaway from the conference was her use and choice of words. She said the phrase "Don't ask for Committee on Status of Women Open Session August 15, 2018 Page 4 SUBJECT DISCUSSION ACTION permission, just lead" was shared by one of the speakers and has posted it on her personal social media page. One of her highlights was meeting Kamala Lopez again, who is the director of the film "Equal Means Equal." She said the movie was shown twice on Kauai and that they are in the process of updating the film. Ms. Ignacio-Neumiller said that at the closing dinner the Hawaii State Commission on the Status of Women was recognized as the first state in the nation to pass convention on the "Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination Against Women" (CEDAW) legislation in all counties. Ms. Smith advocated that the Committee seek a commitment from the County to annually budget travel funds that would allow the Commission to participate in the annual conference. Chair Wistinghausen said that she will share a presentation on the conference at the September meeting. She said one of the main initiatives for the National Association of the Commissions for Women is called "The Voices of American Women" and it involved all CSW's across the nation to conduct listening sessions throughout their communities. These listening sessions are intended to gather data on important issues and combine it for presentation to the legislature and she is hoping to roll that out on Kauai. She shared that Ms. Jabola-Carolus was elected to the Board of Directors for the National Association of the Commissions for Women, which would bring much needed representation for Hawaii. Chair Wistinghausen said she also took the tour to Skid Row where majority of the homeless population of about 58,000 reside. They visited a women's center that provided housing, meals, and training on skills and crafts. She will also prepare a "Mahalo" letter to the Mayor for approval of travel funds which provided her an opportunity that she would not have been able to fund herself, and expressed her sincere gratitude. As a supporter, follower, or fan of our documentary film, "Rise of the Wahine: Champions of Title IX," we are thrilled to announce our 2018 Premiere & Film Release coming up on Sept. 5th at the Hawaii Theatre in Honolulu, Oahu, starting at 6:30pm! More than expanding the title of our film, I've integrated feedback from consultants, students, and viewers into a re-edit of the documentary that is 15 minutes tighter and moves the story along with more impact and emotion - a version of the film that I believe will be received better by young people (who have always been the primary audience I was trying to reach ;). One 7th Grade girl, after viewing the film, said: "I think the film was AMAZING! I learned about Title IX. I didn't know what it was. I learned how it impacted women greatly and is a substantial moment in history. " An 11 th Grader remarked: "I loved the film... it brought me to tears. I also learned new things about history I didn't know. " Well, hearing responses like that makes all the hard work over the years worth it, doesn't it? You can WATCH THE NEW TRAILER and learn more about the Premiere and how to pre - order the film here. So here are the details: 1) For those of you in the islands on Sept. 5th, please join us for the 2018 Premiere of "Rise of the Wahine: Champions of Title IX." Mink Foundation, an organization that supports educational access, opportunity, and equity for low-income women and educational enrichment for children. If you plan to purchase tickets, please do so soon, as there are only a limited amount available! An added BONUS! The winner will be announced following the movie premiere and Q&A with the filmmakers. 2) We are excited that this celebration includes the release of the film online as an HD stream, both for Rent and Purchase! You can WATCH THE NEW TRAILER there and learn more about the film as well. Mahalo for your interest and support of the film! Aloha. Dean Kaneshiro Di rector/Writer/Producer riseofthewahinefilm.com P.S. Here's the new poster and info on the film... What does it take to change the world around you? Imagine a world where doors of opportunity are shut to your dreams. Where there are limits to getting into colleges or university programs, careers are closed to you, and the only athletic programs available are poorly funded, if they exist at all. Well, this is what it was like for women and girls leading up to the incredible social and political transformation that took place in the 1970s in America. Opportunities for females to succeed at work, school, home, and in every industry in society back then are no where near what they are today, in large part because of sweeping change due to Title IX legislation. But to hold this ground and continue to move forward, we must remember our history. In the years following the Civil Rights movement and the passage of Title IX in 1972, a headstrong African -American female coach, the first Asian -American U.S. congresswoman, and the team captain of a rag -tag female volleyball team, battled from the halls of Washington D.C. to the dusty volleyball courts of the University of Hawaii, fighting for the rights of girls to play sports. "Rise of the Wahine" is the Winner of the Hawaii Film Festival Audience Award for Best Documentary, and is both rich in women's history and inspiring for all who desire to transform the world around them. It is perfect for families to view together, sports teams or high school/college classes, and for young men to grow in a deeper understanding in their hearts towards the struggles of the women and girls around them. It's also an exciting, David -vs -Goliath nail -biter story of the competition between the tiny, Pacific Island scrappers of the UH Wahine volleyball team and the extraordinarily talented giants from UCLA. Above all, the film reveals how change -makers confront and overcome injustice with wisdom, an innovative spirit, and without becoming victims to their circumstances. "Rise of the Wahine (pronounced, "wuh-hee-nay, " Hawaiian for "woman') : Champions of Title IX" features Patsy Mink, Dr. Donnis Thompson, Dr. Bernice Sandler, Dave Shoji, and Gwendolyn Mink, and is narrated by Sarah Wayne Callies ("The Walking Dead," "Prison Break," and "Colony"). The film is 76 min. in length and appropriate for all ages (however, it is recommended for ages 12 years old and above due to the historical/educational nature of the film). "...This chronicle of underdogs who overcame daunting obstacles and emerged as rockstar-like figures is lovingly made and never less than highly entertaining."
