Wailua crash results in injuries, road closure
WAILUA — Kuhio Highway in Wailua, south of the south entrance to Leho Drive, was
closed in both directions early Saturday morning following a three -car crash that resulted in
injuries.
The collision occurred shortly before 6 a.m. when a Jeep Cherokee travelling north on
Kuhio Highway crossed the center line and crashed head-on into a Chevy pickup truck heading
south. Soon after, a third driver heading north in a Ford SUV crashed into the Chevy pickup
truck.
The driver of the Jeep Cherokee, a 57-year-old man of `Ele`ele, sustained serious
injuries and was transported by medics to Wilcox Hospital.
No injuries were reported for the driver of the Ford SUV, a 21-year-old man of LThu`e.
The driver of the Chevy pickup truck, a 21-year-old man of LThu`e, sustained non -life threatening
injuries.
Police closed Kuhio Highway in both directions until shortly after 9 a.m. Saturday. During
the closure, southbound traffic was diverted through the Wailua Cane Haul Road. Northbound
traffic was allowed through one lane on Kuhio Highway at approximately 8:40 a.m.
The investigation of this crash remains ongoing.
