Male visitor drowns in waters off HanakapPai
HANAKAPI'AI — Kaua'i police have confirmed that a male visitor apparently drowned
Tuesday afternoon in waters off Hanak5pT'ai Beach on Kaua'i's North Shore.
He has been identified as 57-year-old Timothy Axtelle of Washington.
Firefighters received a call Tuesday morning of a swimmer in distress off Hanak5pi'ai
Beach. Shortly after noon, Rescue 3 aboard Air 1 located the unresponsive man in rough surf
about a quarter mile off shore.
Rescuers recovered the man and flew him to a nearby landing zone at K@`@ Beach, but
he could not be revived.
The man was transported to Wilcox Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
An autopsy is pending, however foul play is not suspected in the cause of his death.
Volunteers with Life's Bridges, a grief counseling service, assisted the man's family.
This is Kaua'i's first drowning of 2018.
