Suspect apprehended for Hanama`ulu hit-and-run
HANAMA`ULU — A male suspect was taken into police custody on Saturday, Jan. 20, in
connection with the apparent hit-and-run crash that occurred on Jan. 11, in Hanama`ulu.
Virgil Caday, age 59 of HanamNulu, was arrested on suspicion of first degree Negligent
Injury, Accidents Involving Serious Bodily Injury, Inattention to Driving, Tampering with Physical
Evidence, and Tampering with a Witness.
He has since been released pending further investigation.
The crash occurred at approximately 7 a.m. on Jan. 11, when police received a report of
a 12-year-old girl injured along Laukona Street, just south of the Ho`ohana Street junction, in
Hanama`ulu.
A preliminary investigation revealed that the child appeared to have been walking along
Laukona Street when she was struck by a vehicle. The involved vehicle was not at the scene
when police arrived.
The victim remains in critical condition at Queen's Hospital.
The investigation remains ongoing.
"I'd like to thank the community for their patience and assistance during the length of this
investigation," said Kauai Police Chief Darryl Perry. "Our officers worked diligently in order to
secure an arrest for this tragic incident. Our thoughts remain with the victim and her family
during this difficult time."
