Rescuers search for missing fisherman
KALIHIWAI — Rescuers are actively searching for a missing fisherman in waters off of
Kalihiwai on the North Shore.
His identity has not yet been released.
According to a preliminary report, the man was last seen Wednesday afternoon walking
with his fishing gear in an area known as Dragon's Breath, near Kalihiwai and Kauapea Beach.
At approximately 6 p.m., witnesses observed an unresponsive man in the water and
called 911.
Hanalei firefighters on jet -ski and Rescue 3 specialists aboard Air 1 responded to the call
and initiated an air- and sea -based search. Due to dangerous ocean conditions and loss of
daylight, officials suspended the search at approximately 7 p.m. Wednesday.
The air and sea search resumed Thursday morning and is being led by the Kaua'i Fire
Department with resources from the County's Ocean Safety Bureau and the Kaua'i Police
Department.
