Police have identified the man as 25-year-old Preston Ikehara-Yasay of Kapa`a. Hanalei firefighters and rescue specialists initiated the search shortly after 6 p.m. Wednesday, when witnesses reported seeing an unresponsive man in waters near Kauapea Beach, in Kalihiwai. The search was suspended Wednesday night at approximately 7 p.m., and resumed on Thursday morning with lifeguards and firefighters on jet -ski, Rescue 3 aboard Air 1, and a helicopter from the U.S. Coast Guard. Shoreline searches were also conducted Thursday by the Kauai Police Department, the state Department of Land and Natural Resources, and members of the public. So far there has been no sign of the man. All agencies are expected to resume their search at daylight Friday.
