Distressed swimmers rescued from waters off Makua Beach; Injured hiker rescued on
Nounou Trail
Ocean Safety Bureau officials rescued two people in distress off waters at Makua Beach
on Friday afternoon.
Shortly after 4 p.m. Friday, OSB officials received a call from dispatch of a father and
son in distress.
Lifeguards from the H5'ena Tower were able to reach the father and son and bring them
safely to shore via rescue tube. They were later treated and released by medics.
Shortly after 5:50 p.m., dispatch notified Engine 2 and Rescue 3 of an injured hiker on
the Nounou Trail.
Two Kauai Fire Department officials hiked the trail and met the injured hiker. Air 1 and
Rescue 3 were able to short haul the hiker from the trail to the park area, where awaiting medics
met and later released the hiker at the scene.
A High Surf Advisory is in effect for all north- and west -facing shores until 6 p.m.
Sunday. Beachgoers are encouraged to visit guarded beaches.
A Flash Flood Watch is also in effect for Kauai through Sunday afternoon.
