Fire destroys Lawa`i home, displaces couple
LAWAI — Two people have been displaced after a fire destroyed their Lawa`i home early
Monday morning.
The couple was present at the time and no injuries were reported.
Kal5heo firefighters were dispatched to the scene at approximately 1:10 a.m. and found
a two-story dwelling on Wawae Road fully engulfed in flames.
A crew from the Hanapepe station also responded and were joined by personnel from
the Fire Prevention Bureau, the on -duty Battalion Chief, and police.
The fire was deemed under control at about 2:20 a.m., and the scene was cleared by fire
officials shortly before 7:40 a.m.
The fire is believed to have started on the first floor, but the cause remains under
investigation.
Fire inspectors consider the home a total loss and estimated damages to the structure
and its contents to be roughly $700,000.
Volunteers with the American Red Cross assisted the couple.
