Male visitor drowns in `Anini waters
`ANINI — A 60-year-old male visitor apparently drowned Thursday afternoon while
swimming in waters off `Anini Beach on Kaua`i's North Shore.
Police have identified him as Douglas Hoskins of Washington.
Hoskins was swimming approximately 100 yards from shore when he became
distressed and yelled out for help. Two bystanders entered the water and paddled out to the
man on stand-up paddle boards, but discovered him unresponsive. They brought him to shore
where they began administering CPR.
Rescuers received a call at approximately 3:50 p.m. of a man needing medical
assistance at `Anini Beach, on the north end of the park's camping site. Hanalei firefighters and
lifeguards from the North Roving Patrol Unit arrived on scene to find medics continuing with
resuscitation efforts, but the man could not be revived.
Hoskins was transported to Mahelona Hospital where he was pronounced dead. He was
then brought to Wilcox Morgue.
An autopsy is pending.
Volunteers with Life's Bridges, a grief counseling service, assisted the man's family.
This is Kaua`i's third drowning of 2018.
