Mayor Managing Director COUNTY OF KAUA'I OFFICE OF THE PROSECUTING ATTORNEY News Release For Immediate Release: March 8, 2018 JUSTIN KOLLAR, PROSECUTING ATTORNEY Tel (808) 241-1888 Fax (808) 241-1758 Jury finds man guilty of assault LIHU`E — A Fifth Circuit Court jury found Koa Navarro, 32, of Kapa'a, guilty as charged Thursday morning of a single count of Assault in the Third Degree, for his involvement in attacking a man near the Kaua'i Beach Resort on March 22, 2017. Assault in the third degree is a misdemeanor punishable by up to a year in jail. Witness testimony and other evidence showed that just after midnight that evening, Navarro approached a man, accused him of talking to his girlfriend, and punched him in the face several times. Fifth Circuit Chief Judge Randal G.B. Valenciano presided over the three-day jury trial. The State of Hawai'i was represented at trial by Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Ginger D. Grinpas. Navarro was represented by the Office of the Public Defender. Navarro has previous convictions for Harassment in 2014 and Assault in the Third Degree in 2011. Navarro will be sentenced on June 21. "Alcohol, jealousy and fists can be a dangerous combination," said Prosecuting Attorney Justin F. Kollar. "People must find other ways to resolve their disputes.
