Vandalism continues at County of Kauai parks
Vandalism continues at County of Kaua'i parks, as park staff discovered the sky light of
the renovated comfort station damaged at Po'ipu Beach Park as well as fixtures at the
Hanapepe Cliffside Park burned.
The sky light at Po'ipu Beach Park was found damage by park staff on Friday, March 9,
at 10 a.m., while fixtures at the Hanapepe Cliffside Park was discovered burned Thursday
morning, March 15.
"It is frustrating that these types of occurrences are becoming all too frequent in our
parks," said Department of Parks and Recreation Director Lenny Rapozo. "We are hoping the
public can help to curb these incidents, as these parks are for our community members and
visitors to enjoy."
If deemed necessary, the sky light at Po`ipu Beach Park would cost approximately
$1,500 for parts and labor. The fixtures at Hanapepe Park would cost $500 for parts and
cleaning supplies.
On Tuesday, March 6, a newly improved playground at Po'ipu Beach Park was
discovered vandalized by members of the public. Cables from the playground's Boingo drum
panel were cut and has since been repaired.
Part of a $670,000 project by the Department of Parks and Recreation to upgrade its
heavily used park facilities, improvements to Po'ipu Beach Park — which included replacing
fixtures in the main comfort station and improvements to the pavilions, playground, and showers
— were completed in the latter half of February.
The Hanapepe Cliffside Park comfort station was planned and constructed by
community volunteers with the support of the County of Kauai.
To report suspicious activity, please call Police Dispatch at 241-1711.
