Kauai man dies in waters off Po`ipu Wednesday
PO`IPO — A Kauai resident died in waters off Po'ipO on Wednesday afternoon.
Police have identified the man as 33-year-old Brandon Pagala of Kekaha.
Shortly after 1 p.m., firefighters from the Koloa fire station and lifeguards from the South
Roving Patrol Unit were notified of a man in distress near Ho`ona Beach, also known as Baby
Beach, in Po`ipu.
According to police, Pagala was heading out to scuba dive with a friend roughly 25 yards
out from the reef when he became distressed and apparently lost consciousness. The friend
brought Pagala back to shore and began administering CPR with assistance from a bystander.
Rescuers and medics arrived to the scene and continued resuscitation efforts. The man
was transported to Wilcox Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
An autopsy is pending to determine the cause of the man's death.
