Standoff in Kalaheo ends in arrest
KALAHEO — A nearly seven -hour standoff with police ended without injury Wednesday
night in Kalaheo and the suspect, a 42-year-old Kalaheo man, remains in police custody.
Kauai police responded to a home on La`e Road in Kalaheo at approximately 3 p.m. on
Wednesday, after multiple individuals reported that a neighbor, Ian Bagano, was making threats
of violence.
Upon their arrival, police discovered that Bagano had barricaded himself inside the
residence and would not respond to their attempts to communicate. There were no other
occupants in the home at the time.
Police secured a perimeter around the residence, evacuated surrounding neighbors, and
blocked off a portion of the road as a safety precaution.
Following several hours of negotiation, Bagano was safely detained at approximately
9:40 p.m. He was subsequently arrested for suspicion of Terroristic Threatening in the First
Degree.
Roughly 45 officers from KPD's Patrol Services Bureau, Investigative Services Bureau,
Special Response Team, and Crisis Negotiator Team responded to the incident. Firefighters
from the Kalaheo fire station also responded, along with medics who evaluated Bagano at the
scene after he was detained.
"I commend and thank our officers and all responders of this incident, for working
together to successfully defuse this disturbing situation, while keeping our residents and the
suspect safe from harm," stated Deputy Chief Michael Contrades.
Bagano was initially transported to Wilcox Hospital for further evaluation, then to Police
Cellblock where he currently remains in lieu of $10,000 bail.
Police are continuing their investigation of this incident.
