9:15 p.m. UPDATE: Homes destroyed by landslide
The Kaua'i Emergency Management Agency (KEMA) is reporting that severe flooding
and mudslides have ripped two homes from their foundations along Wainiha Powerhouse Road
in Wainiha Saturday evening.
"At this time, we believe that the homes were vacant when the incident occurred," stated
KEMA Administrator Elton Ushio. "We have been in direct contact with guests and residents
along Wainiha Powerhouse Road, and off -duty firefighters who live in the area were able to
respond and could not locate any persons in distress."
The Kaua'i Emergency Management Agency has activated its Emergency Operations
Center and officials continue to monitor the situation.
The Flash Flood Warning for the island of Kaua'i has been extended to 11:15 p.m.
As of approximately 7 p.m., Kuhi6 Highway in Hanalei is closed until further notice due to
flooding. Also, both lanes of Kuhi6 Highway between Waikoko and Wainiha will remain closed in
both directions through Saturday night following multiple landslides that have continued to occur
in the area since approximately 2 p.m.
Volunteers with the American Red Cross have opened shelters at the Church of the
Pacific in Princeville and at Hanalei Elementary School in Hanalei.
The Kaua'i Island Utility Cooperative (KIUC) is reporting power outages in Wainiha and
Hanalei.
The Department of Water (DOW) has issued an immediate water conservation notice for
all residents in Wainiha and Ha`ena until further notice, due to inclement weather and the power
outage.
Residents and businesses in Wainiha to HA'ena are urged to limit water consumption to
essential uses only, in order to avoid a water outage.
