Mayor Managing Director COUNTY OF KAUA'I KAUA'I EMERGENCY MANAGEMEMENT AGENCY News Release For Immediate Release: April 14, 2018 ELTON LISHIO, ADMINISTRATOR Tel (808) 241-1800 Fax (808) 241-1860 9:15 p.m. UPDATE: Homes destroyed by landslide The Kaua'i Emergency Management Agency (KEMA) is reporting that severe flooding and mudslides have ripped two homes from their foundations along Wainiha Powerhouse Road in Wainiha Saturday evening. "At this time, we believe that the homes were vacant when the incident occurred," stated KEMA Administrator Elton Ushio. "We have been in direct contact with guests and residents along Wainiha Powerhouse Road, and off -duty firefighters who live in the area were able to respond and could not locate any persons in distress." The Kaua'i Emergency Management Agency has activated its Emergency Operations Center and officials continue to monitor the situation. The Flash Flood Warning for the island of Kaua'i has been extended to 11:15 p.m. As of approximately 7 p.m., Kuhi6 Highway in Hanalei is closed until further notice due to flooding. Also, both lanes of Kuhi6 Highway between Waikoko and Wainiha will remain closed in both directions through Saturday night following multiple landslides that have continued to occur in the area since approximately 2 p.m. Volunteers with the American Red Cross have opened shelters at the Church of the Pacific in Princeville and at Hanalei Elementary School in Hanalei. The Kaua'i Island Utility Cooperative (KIUC) is reporting power outages in Wainiha and Hanalei. The Department of Water (DOW) has issued an immediate water conservation notice for all residents in Wainiha and Ha`ena until further notice, due to inclement weather and the power outage. Residents and businesses in Wainiha to HA'ena are urged to limit water consumption to essential uses only, in order to avoid a water outage.
