"Do not drink" advisory lifted for Wainiha and Haena residents
Water service outage for a portion of Haena and Weke Road in Hanalei
HAENA — The Department of Water (DOW) has lifted the "Do not drink" advisory for all Wainiha
and Haena customers as of 4:00 p.m. this afternoon. Officials have completed the required water
quality assessments to the affected systems to determine that water services for the Wainiha and
Haena systems are safe for drinking, cooking and normal consumption.
"It was important to conduct and complete assessments for the Wainiha, Haena and Hanalei
systems in order to ensure safe water quality before lifting the 'Do not drink' advisory. We thank
our customers for their patience and cooperation during this process," said Steve Kyono, DOW's
acting manager and chief engineer. "We are committed to the Department's compliance of State
and Federal regulations in order to continue to provide safe drinking water to the people of Kauai."
DOW also announces a water service outage for customers located on a portion of Kuhio Highway,
from the Manoa Stream to the Limahuli Stream area in Haena, until further notice, due to reports
of a mainline break in the area. Additionally, DOW crews have reported extensive damages to the
mainline on Weke Road that has resulted in a continued water service outage affecting customers
located on Weke Road; between Pilikoa Street and the Makai-end of Weke Road in Hanalei, until
further notice.
As a courtesy, two trailer -mounted water tanks containing potable water are available for residents
and guests that are currently without water services. One tank is stationed at YMCA's Camp Naue
located at 7420 Kuhio Highway in Hanalei and the other is located near the intersection of Weke
Road and Pilikoa Street in Hanalei. Residents must bring their own water containers.
DOW crews will continue to conduct damage assessments, routine water samplings, maintenance
and repairs of the Wainiha, Haena and Hanalei systems in addition to its other water systems
around the island.
DOW is working with the Kauai Emergency Management Agency to assess and monitor weather
situations closely. Updates affecting water services will be issued as new information is available.
