KEMA urges residents to report flood damage for FEMA individual
assistance appeal
LIHUE — The Kaua'i Emergency Management Agency (KEMA) is urging Kaua'i residents
affected by the April 14-15 flooding event to submit any unreported damages of homes and
businesses. All reports will be used in the state's appeal to qualify for the Federal Emergency
Management Agency's (FEMA) Individual Assistance program.
On May 9, 2018, FEMA denied Gov. David Ige's request for Individual Assistance for
both the County of Kauai and the City and County of Honolulu. It was determined that Hawai'i
did not meet its impact criteria for funding.
The State of Hawai'i, with support from both counties, has decided to appeal FEMA's
decision.
"I have seen the significant damages that our Kauai people have endured; and that's why
we are doing our best to readdress all qualifiers in our appeal for this funding," stated Mayor
Bernard Carvalho Jr. "And while this program for individuals may not seem like a lot, our
residents truly need every assistance possible. So I encourage all affected to please submit their
report today."
Kauai individuals wishing to report their damages are asked to visit the county's website
www.kauai.ciov and click on the "Online Damage Form" link located on the home page.
Residents may also submit their report by calling KEMA at 241-1800 on weekdays from 8 a.m. to
4 p.m. until Friday, May 18.
The State of Hawaii has until June 9, 2018 to appeal FEMA's decision.
For more information, please call KEMA at 241-1800.
