According to officials, dispatch received a call shortly after 1:30 a.m. on Tuesday, May 22, of a car possibly going off a cliff and hearing a crash on the Kilauea side of Kalihiwai Bay. Once on scene, fire personnel discovered damage to a guard rail and a trail through the vegetation left by the vehicle. Fire personnel deployed a surfboard and flashlight to the bottom of the scene, since the height of the cliff obscured sight of the victim and vehicle. Fire personnel located the vehicle upside down on rocks at the water's edge and the driver who was outside of the car, alive, sustained injuries to his left leg, and had difficulty breathing. Rescue 3 assisted fire personnel and paddled the victim in on a rescue surfboard. The man was transported to Wilcox Hospital, where he is in critical condition.
