Managing Director COUNTY OF KAUA'I DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS News Release For Immediate Release: June 15, 2018 LYLE TABATA, ACTING COUNTY ENGINEER Tel (808) 241-4996 Fax (808) 241-6604 Public reminded to use appropriate containers for used motor oil LIHU'E — The County Solid Waste Division reminds the public that they must only use appropriate containers to store and transport used motor oil for recycling. A reusable storage container with a lid clearly labeled "used oil" is recommended. An example is a 3 to 5 gallon bucket. If reusing a container that once held food, beverages, or other products, be sure it is leak -proof, thoroughly cleaned, clearly labeled "used oil," and kept out of reach of children and pets. Residents can recycle used motor oil at all County refuse transfer stations and at the Kekaha Landfill for free seven days a week. Never mix used oil with gasoline or solvents. Never put used oil in containers that previously contained bleach or other chemicals. Used oil mixed with bleach, gasoline, or solvent can become hazardous waste. The Solid Waste Division has limited amounts of free motor oil recycling buckets available at the County Solid Waste office at 4444 Rice St. Suite 295 in Lihu'e. Due to limited quantities, buckets are restricted to one per household. These buckets are for motor oil recycling use only. The disposal costs of contaminated used motor oil is expensive, as it must be treated as hazardous waste. For more information, please call the County Recycling Office at 241-4841.
