Visitor dies in waters off Po`ipu Tuesday
PO`IPO — A male visitor from New Mexico died in waters off Po`ipu on Tuesday
afternoon.
He has been identified as 51-year-old Steven Mitchell.
Shortly after 3 p.m., Koloa firefighters were notified of a CPR in progress on a dive boat
that was heading towards the Kukui'ula boat harbor.
According to police, Mitchell was part of a scuba diving tour that took place in waters off
Po`ipu. While in the water, he was observed by another tour diver unresponsive and sinking. He
was brought to the surface and onto the boat, where bystanders began administering CPR.
Firefighters arrived at the harbor, continued CPR and applied an AED. Medics arrived on
scene shortly after and continued resuscitation efforts while they transported the man to Wilcox
Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
An autopsy is pending to determine the cause of the man's death. However, foul play is
not suspected.
Volunteers with Life's Bridges, a grief counseling service, assisted the man's family.
