Mpu car crash causes injuries, highway closure
KIPU — Kaua'i police closed both lanes of Kaumuali'i Highway in KTpu for roughly 1.5
hours on Sunday, following a single -vehicle crash.
The incident occurred at around 10:30 a.m. near mile marker 4.5, just east of Halfway
Bridge, when an eastbound Jeep Grand Cherokee failed to negotiate a curve and sideswiped
the guardrail along the eastbound shoulder.
The vehicle then crossed over the centerline and collided with the guardrail along the
westbound shoulder of the highway, before rolling over and coming to rest on its side.
Bystanders nearby reportedly rolled the vehicle back onto its four wheels before first
responders arrived on scene.
Once on scene, firefighters extricated the driver, a 27-year-old Kapa'a woman, who
sustained serious injuries. Medics transported her to Wilcox Hospital. She was later medevaced
to Queen's Hospital for further treatment.
There were no other occupants in the vehicle.
Both lanes of Kaumuali'i Highway were closed from approximately 11:45 a.m. to 1:15
p.m., while police conducted an on -scene investigation.
The crash remains under police investigation.
