Caday, age 59 of HanamNulu, was charged with Negligent Injury in the First Degree, Leaving the Scene of an Accident Involving Death or Serious Bodily Injury, Inattention to Driving, and Tampering with Physical Evidence. He is currently being held in police cellblock with bail set at $100,000. According to police, Caday was driving on Laukona Street in Hanama'ulu on Jan. 11 at approximately 7 a.m., when he allegedly struck a 12-year-old girl with his vehicle. He then fled the scene, leaving the injured girl unattended along the road. A preliminary investigation led police to arrest Caday on Jan. 20, on suspicion of multiple charges. He was released pending further investigation. KPD's Traffic Safety Section submitted their final investigative report in April to the Office of the Prosecuting Attorney for further review and to determine formal charges. Caday's court appearance has not yet been scheduled. The public is reminded that all individuals are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law. "On behalf of the Kaua'i Police Department and Acting Chief Michael Contrades, I'd like to thank our traffic safety investigators for their diligent work in securing an arrest for this terrible incident," stated Deputy Chief Robert Gausepohl.
