Kauai firefighters respond to four brush fires on Wednesday
Kaua'i firefighters responded to four brush fires in Kapa'a, Waimea, Kekaha, and 'Ele'ele
on Wednesday.
No injuries were reported.
"I commend our firefighters and landowners for their quick response in dealing with
these brush fires," said Kaua'i Fire Department Chief Robert Westerman. "I also want to thank
our community for being vigilant and reporting these fires to dispatch. It is imperative that fires
are reported as soon as possible to prevent bodily harm or structural damage."
Firefighters from the Kapa'a fire station responded to the first fire shortly after 8 a.m.
near a walkway in the vicinity of Mahelona Hospital off Kawaihau Road. The roughly 10-by-15
foot brush fire was quickly extinguished at approximately 8:15 a.m. and firefighters cleared the
scene at approximately 8:20 a.m.
Firefighters from the Waimea and Hanapepe fire stations responded to a second fire,
which was reported around 11:30 a.m., on the makai side of Kaumuali'i Highway in Waimea
near the vicinity of Russian Fort Elizabeth.
Air 1 monitored the roughly 5-acre brush fire to ensure it did not spread across the
highway.
Fire crews were joined by personnel from Gay and Robinson, Inc. — who assisted with
water tankers and heavy equipment. The fire was under control at approximately 12:10 p.m. and
fully extinguished shortly after. Crews cleared the scene at approximately 1:40 p.m.
Shortly before 5:30 p.m., Waimea firefighters were notified of a fire behind the old
Kekaha Sugar Mill in Kekaha.
Once on scene, Waimea firefighters extinguished the roughly 2,000-square-foot fire and
were back in service shortly before 5:50 p.m.
At approximately 8:15 p.m., Hanapepe firefighters responded to a brush fire near the
vicinity of Glass Beach in `Ele`ele.
The roughly 20-by-20 foot fire along the cliff side was contained at approximately 8:30
p.m. and firefighters cleared the scene at approximately 8:35 p.m.
The cause of the fires remain under investigation. Anyone with information is urged to
contact the Kauai Police Department at 241-1711.
