Managing Director MICHAEL CONTRADES, ACTING CHIEF Tel (808) 241-1600 Fax (808) 241-1604 Vehicle crash, fire causes highway closure Monday HANAMA`ULU — Police and fire personnel responded to a single -vehicle crash that resulted in a vehicle fire along Kuhi6 Highway in Hanama`ulu Monday night. No injuries were reported. According to police, a 76-year-old male of Hanama`ulu was traveling north on Kuhi6 Highway, near Hanama`ulu Road, shortly before 9:30 p.m. While attempting to stop along the northbound shoulder of the highway, the vehicle malfunctioned and then collided with the guy - wire of a utility pole. The driver exited the vehicle, a 1999 silver Toyota Corolla, shortly before it caught fire. Firefighters from the LThu`e fire station were dispatched to the scene and found the vehicle along Kuhi6 Highway fully engulfed in flames. Firefighters gained control of the blaze, and the fire was fully extinguished shortly before 10 p.m. Kuhi6 Highway was closed in both directions for approximately 30 minutes, while crews worked to extinguish the blaze. No arrests or citations were issued as a result of this crash. The vehicle is considered a total loss.
