Managing Director MICHAEL CONTRADES, ACTING CHIEF Tel (808) 241-1600 Fax (808) 241-1604 Traffic crash closes KQhio Highway in Wailua WAILUA — A three -car crash that occurred shortly before 5 p.m. on Friday resulted in the closure of Kuhio Highway near the Marine Camp access road in Wailua. Three people were transported to Wilcox Hospital as a result of the crash. At approximately 4:40 p.m., a Ford SUV was heading south on Kuhio Highway when it attempted a left turn onto the Marine Camp access road and was struck by an oncoming Honda sedan. A Chevy pickup truck following the Honda sedan was attempting to stop when it also hit the Ford SUV. The driver of the Ford SUV, a 47-year-old Kapa`a man, sustained serious injuries from the crash. The female passenger of the SUV, age 48 of Kapa'a, was extricated from the vehicle in critical condition. Both occupants were transported to Wilcox Hospital where they currently remain. The driver of the Honda sedan, a 28-year-old Kapa`a woman, was also transported to Wilcox Hospital, but has since been released. The male driver of the Chevy pickup, age 53 of Kapa`a, sustained no injuries from the crash and was released at the scene. Police opened the single -lane Wailua Bypass Road, also known as the Cane Haul Road, to alternating traffic at approximately 5:30 p.m. At approximately 5:45 p.m., police then directed northbound traffic along Kuhio Highway and dedicated the Wailua Bypass Road to southbound travel. Kuhio Highway was reopened at approximately 8 p.m., once officers with KPD's Traffic Safety Section concluded its on -scene investigation and cleared the roadway of debris. The crash remains under police investigation.
