Wailua home damaged by fire, families displaced
WAILUA — Five individuals have been displaced from their home on Koukalaka Place in
Wailua Homesteads following a fire that broke out Friday afternoon.
A 40-year-old male occupant, who was home when the fire started, was treated for
smoke inhalation at the scene. The man was transported by medics to Wilcox Hospital for
further treatment.
The four other residents were not home when the fire broke out.
Kapa`a firefighters were first on scene around noon to find the single -story home fully
involved. Firefighters were soon joined by personnel from the LThu`e and Kaiakea fire stations,
as well as the on -duty Battalion Chief.
The fire was deemed under control at approximately 12:15 p.m. and fully extinguished
by 12:20 p.m. The blaze caused substantial damages to the home, but the cost has not yet
been determined.
Volunteers with the American Red Cross are assisting the displaced families.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
