Department of Public Works reminding public of general guidelines,
information on signs
LIHU`E — The Department of Public Works is reminding the public that the County of
Kaua`i's sign ordinance has specific rules relating to specifications, permitting, and enforcement
of signs.
Signs that are prohibited include roof signs, portable signs, and special banners or
pennants displayed longer than 10 days prior or one day following an event.
Additionally, feather banners or wind signs — which obtain their movement from the wind
— are prohibited.
"The benefits of having a sign ordinance reduces visual clutter, allows fair advertising,
and promotes safety for everyone," said Acting County Engineer Lyle Tabata.
Signs that need permits include directional signs, signs in business and industrial
districts, banners, or pennants and ground signs.
Before constructing a sign, please note that the sign ordinance has rules that include
size, shape, location, and placement of a sign.
Applications for a sign permit may be obtained at the Public Works Building Division on
4444 Rice Street, Suite 175, from 7:45 a.m. to 4:15 p.m., Monday to Friday.
The sign ordinance may be obtained from the following platforms:
• Download it from the County of Kauai website :
http://www.kauai.gov/PublicWorks/Building;
• Obtain a copy from the Office of the Kauai County Clerk at 4396 Rice Street, Suite 209,
from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday to Friday;
• Or call the Kauai County Clerk at 241-4188 and make arrangements to purchase and
have a copy mailed.
When signs are not in compliance, the Department of Public Works will issue a notice
and compliance; and removal must take place within five working days. Failure to comply may
result in a fine of up to $50 per day for every day of the ordinance violation, pursuant to Chapter
15, Article 4, Outdoor Sign Ordinance Kauai County Code 1987.
To report apparent violations of the sign ordinance, you may call the County Building
Division at 241-4854.
