Suspect arrested for Kalaheo hit-and-run
LIHU`E — A Kalaheo man was arrested Thursday in connection with the apparent hit-
and-run crash that occurred on Sunday, in Kalaheo.
David Curry, age 44, was arrested on suspicion of Accidents Involving Serious Bodily
Injury or Death. He has since been released pending further investigation.
At approximately 11:10 p.m. on Sunday, a police officer was driving home on Halewili
Road, in Kalaheo, when he discovered a man's body on the roadway.
The man has been identified as Florentino Maipi, age 24, of `Ele`ele.
According to a preliminary investigation, Maipi was walking in the eastbound lane of
Halewili Road when he was struck by an eastbound vehicle. The involved vehicle was not at the
scene when police arrived.

Maipi was transported to Kauai Veterans Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced
Police initiated a search for the driver of the vehicle, and asked the public on Monday for
any information about the incident. Based on the debris from the crash, police narrowed down a
description of the alleged vehicle as a silver Nissan Frontier truck, with four-wheel drive, and
made between the years of 1998 and 2004.
On Tuesday, Curry willingly came to the LThu`e station and notified police that he could
have been the driver involved.
Police recovered Curry's vehicle — a 2004 silver Nissan Frontier with four-wheel drive —
from his residence on Tuesday, and made an official arrest on Thursday morning.
An autopsy is pending to determine the exact cause of Maipi's death.
The investigation remains ongoing.
