Open house, presentation on Li-hu`e Town Core Mobility and Revitalization
project set for Oct. 18
LIHU'E — The Department of Public Works and Kiewit Infrastructure West Co. will hold
an open house and presentation on the LThu'e Town Core Revitalization project on Thursday,
Oct. 18, from 6 to 8 p.m., at the Wilcox Elementary School Cafeteria.
This open house and presentation will provide information and status of the project,
including an overview of the phasing of the construction work anticipated to be completed by
late 2019.
"The LThu`e Town Core Mobility and Revitalization project will improve safety for all
users, including those driving, walking, bicycling, and taking transit," said Mayor Bernard
Carvalho Jr. "It will increase the number of full-time parking spaces along Rice Street to support
economic development."
The project includes streetscape improvements, development of a transit hub, new and
expanded sidewalks, a shared -use path, improved bus stops and bike facilities, safer pedestrian
crossings, and dedicated on -street parking.
This project is funded in part from the Transportation Investment Generating Economic
Recovery (TIGER) program. In 2015, the County of Kaua'i was awarded this $15.1 million grant
from the U.S. Department of Transportation. The county will fund an additional $2 million to the
project. TIGER grants are targeted investments for local communities that increase safety,
create jobs, and modernize the country's infrastructure.
