Jesse Korn sentenced to 35 years in prison for sex assault
LIHU'E — Prosecuting Attorney Justin F. Kollar announced that Jesse Korn, 27, formerly
of Koloa, was sentenced to serve consecutive 20-, 10- and five-year prison sentences in two
separate cases for a total period of 35 years. He had previously pleaded no contest to Sexual
Assault in the First Degree, Kidnapping, Sexual Assault in the Second Degree, and Sexual
Assault in the Third Degree.
Second Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Rebecca Like represented the State of Hawai'i and
court -appointed Attorney John Murphy represented Korn, who was present in court today with a
Marshallese interpreter.
Korn was apprehended following a two-day manhunt and has been in custody since
Dec. 12, 2017, in lieu of $500,000 bail.
Kaua'i Police Detectives Darren Rose, Makana Rivera and Michael Nii, as well as Crime
Scene Specialist Stephanie Regan, worked tirelessly in investigating these offenses. The
sentence was handed down by Circuit Court Judge Kathleen N.A. Watanabe.
In the early morning hours of Dec. 10, 2017, Korn sexually assaulted three separate
victims. Each of them were sleeping when he entered their homes. One of the victims was 11
years old at the time of the assault.
Judge Watanabe adopted the arguments of the State and found that the nature and
circumstances of the crimes warranted a 35-year prison sentence. She noted that the charges
involved multiple individuals, the offenses were sexual assault, and Korn had past convictions.
She went on to note that the seriousness of the offenses warrant that the public be protected
from Korn and that a sentence of 35 years was necessary to reflect the harm done to the
victims.
Because Korn is not a U.S. citizen, he faces deportation following his 35-year prison
sentence.
Kollar stated, `Thanks to the excellent work of the detectives and the crime scene
specialist in this case, we have permanently removed another predator from our streets. Our
thoughts remain with the victims in this case, who all suffered tremendous trauma as a result of
these crimes. We hope this result provides them with a measure of closure in this chapter of
their lives."
