Police remind residents to be on alert this holiday season
LIHU'E — The Kaua'i Police Department is reminding the public to be vigilant in
preventing property crime and scams during the holiday season.
"During the holidays, many people often let their guards down while celebrating with their
loved ones," said Acting Chief of Police Michael Contrades. "Our hope is not to scare anyone,
but to remind all to be aware of criminal activity that can still occur year-round."
Police are urging residents to be on alert to recognize suspicious activity and also
reduce their chances of becoming a victim. KPD offers the following crime prevention tips:
• Keep doors and entryways locked at all times, even when you're home.
• Trim shrubs and hedges around your property so burglars don't have a place to hide.
• Install motion detection lighting around dark exterior areas, walkways, and doorways.
• If you can afford it, install a security system.
• Be aware of anyone who might be "casing" your property for a future break-in.
• Do not answer or return calls from unknown numbers.
• Use caution when responding to unsolicited calls or e-mails, or unknown individuals
on social networking sites.
• Check your bank, credit card, and phone statements regularly. If you see an
unknown or unauthorized charge, immediately notify your bank or service provider.
• If it sounds too good to be true, it usually is.
• Senior citizens are popular targets for scam artists as they tend to be more trusting
of unknown individuals. Responsible family members should help to keep them safe.
"Community involvement is a crucial element to solving and preventing property crimes,"
added Acting Chief Contrades. "By working together to hold criminals responsible, we can work
to exponentially reduce crime in our neighborhoods islandwide."
If you suspect a scam or suspicious activity, please call the Kauai Police Department at
241-1711 and file an official police report.
