Blessing held for Lima Ola affordable housing project on Monday
`ELPELE — The Kauai County Housing Agency held a blessing for the Lima Ola
affordable housing project in `Ele`ele on Monday. In addition to blessing the future site of the
project, the Housing Agency also celebrated the completion and approvals of land entitlements
and permitting which gave Lima Ola the approval to proceed.
"At a time when housing costs continue to rise, creating opportunities for our local
families to own a home here on Kauai is a shared priority for our administration, our County
Council, our State Legislature, our Federal government, and our community," said Mayor
Bernard Carvalho Jr.
In addition to receiving the necessary permitting approvals, the county has also secured
a total of $19 million of funding for the project.
The first phase of the housing project will commence in early 2019, with vertical
construction to begin in 2020.
"I would like to thank our Housing Agency, Alexander and Baldwin, Kauai Coffee, the
west side community, and all our partners for getting the ball rolling for Lima Ola," added Mayor
Carvalho.
The event also gave acknowledgment to the many partners and relationships built during
the process leading up to the blessing. Housing Director Kanani Fu pointed to the many
community members who participated in the planning and permitting stages. The Kauai County
Housing Agency worked with the Hawaii Housing Finance Development Corporation and
Hawaii Senate President Ron Kouchi's office to secure a $13 million Dwelling Unit Revolving
Loan Fund.
"We are the first county in the state to utilize this type of financing and we hope access
to these types of resources will increase our supply and expedite the delivery housing units,"
said Housing Director Fu.
Phase one of the project will include 38 single-family homes and 111 multi -family
dwellings and with construction commencing in spring 2019. For more information about the
