Pedestrian dies in Wednesday morning traffic crash
LAWA`I — A Lawa`i man, age 85, died from his injuries after he was struck by a vehicle
while crossing Kaumuali`i Highway in Lawa`i Wednesday morning.
His identity has not yet been released.
According to a preliminary investigation, the man was attempting to cross the highway
shortly before 6 a.m., when he was struck by an eastbound Honda sedan fronting the Lawa'i 7-
Eleven. A preliminary report revealed the man was apparently not walking in a marked
crosswalk.
Responding medics confirmed that the man had no vital signs and was presumed dead
at the scene. He was transported to Wilcox Hospital, where a medical doctor formally
pronounced him dead, as is standard protocol.
The female driver of the sedan, age 37, did not report any injuries.
Police closed Kaumuali`i Highway in both directors for roughly three hours, while officers
with KPD's Traffic Safety Section conducted an on -scene investigation. During the closure,
traffic was diverted through Koloa and Piko roads.
An autopsy is pending.
The investigation remains ongoing; however, speed and alcohol/drugs do not appear to
be factors in this collision.
