County officials remind public of fines for illegal dumping at Kauai recycles drop sites
County officials are reminding the public that fines up to $1,000 may be imposed for
illegal dumping at Kauai recycles drop sites.
"This is our island. This is our home. We need to take pride in how we treat our
backyard," said Mayor Derek S. K. Kawakami. "This type of illegal activity could jeopardize the
use of the Kauai recycles drop sites if there are ongoing complaints from site landlords or
neighbors. Additionally, items illegally dumped result in additional labor to clean the area and
relocate materials, which puts further burden on our taxpayers."
Contractors have observed the following items illegally dumped at sites recently:
furniture, appliances, vehicle components, pallets, paint, electronics, and bagged trash.
The Kauai recycles drop sites accept source -separated cardboard, mixed
paper/newspaper, glass jars and bottles, plastics No. 1 and No. 2 bottles and jars, and
aluminum and steel cans for recycling. Many of the drop bins have deposit slots on two sides to
maximize use of space in the bins.
Please note that the County of Kauai offers a variety of free recycling and refuse
disposal opportunities for residents at four refuse transfer stations throughout the island as well
as the Kekaha Landfill. Please visit www.kauai.gov/recycling for more information.
The Kauai recycles drop bins are for residential use only. Commercially -generated
recyclables can be brought to Garden Isle Disposal's Nawiliwili warehouse at 2666 Niumalu
Road free of charge Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. with lunch from 11 a.m. to
noon, and on Saturday from 7 to 11 a.m.
Anyone seeing illegal activity relating to the recycling bins is asked to call the County
Recycling Office at 241-4841 or Police Dispatch at 241-1711.
