KPD plants pinwheels for child abuse prevention
LIHU'E — The Kauai Police Department (KPD) held a pinwheel garden planting
ceremony Wednesday, April 25, in honor of Child Abuse Prevention Awareness Month.
"Kaua'i police stands together with our community to speak out against child abuse,"
said Kauai Police Deputy Chief Michael Contrades. "I'd like to thank and acknowledge all of our
community- and county -partners for the positive relationships we continue to build as we work
towards a common goal to bring an end to violence and abuse on our island. We are raising
awareness for these important issues, and hope that it will affect change not just during the
month of April but every day of the year."
At the ceremony, KPD along with Girls Scouts Kauai planted over 200 blue pinwheels in
the courtyard of Ka Hale Maka`i o Kaua'i, Police Headquarters in LThu'e.
Through the national "Pinwheels for Prevention" program, the blue pinwheel is the
national symbol for child abuse prevention as it serves as a reminder of the great childhoods all
children deserve.
