Firefighters extinguish Hanapepe structure fire
HANAPEPE — Firefighters have cleared the scene of a structure fire that broke out
Wednesday morning on Puolo Road in Hanapepe.
A female occupant who was home at the time was able to escape unharmed. However,
the owners' two cats appeared to have died of smoke inhalation.
Multiple units were dispatched to the scene at approximately 10:30 a.m. to find the
carport and a portion of the house on fire. Firefighters from the Hanapepe fire station were first
on scene, and were soon assisted by Waimea, Kalaheo and Lihu'e firefighters, along with the
on -duty Battalion Chief and the Kauai Fire Chief.
During their response, Kauai Island Utility Cooperative disconnected the power lines in
the area to allow firefighters to safely extinguish the fire.
The fire was deemed under control and fully extinguished shortly after 11 a.m.
Firefighters from the KFD Prevention Bureau and KFD Training Bureau, along with
Kauai police also responded to the scene.
The American Red Cross was called to assist the occupants of the home.
Damages to the structure and its contents are estimated to be roughly $300,000.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
