Officers of the Month recognized at Police Commission Meeting
LIHU`E — The Kauai Police Department (KPD) recognized three Officers of the Month
during October's Police Commission meeting held on Oct. 26, at the Mo`ikeha Building.
Patrol Services Bureau officers Kristopher Breyer, Creighton Tamagawa, and Joel
Snyder were each acknowledged for their life-saving accomplishments in three separate
incidents in June and August.
On June 2, while off duty with his family at a resort swimming pool, Officer Breyer was
alerted to a child underwater and in distress. Officer Breyer immediately jumped into the pool
and brought the child to safety.
On Aug. 9, while Officer Tamagawa was speaking to a suspect at his residence, a
female household member began suffering an apparent panic attack and stopped breathing.
Officer Tamagawa immediately administered CPR to the woman, and she regained
consciousness.
On Aug. 18, Officer Joel Snyder was off duty attending a wedding reception at a resort
when he noticed a female guest choking on food and needing assistance. Officer Snyder
immediately applied the Heimlich maneuver, which cleared her airway and restored her
breathing.
"Because of the quick actions of Officer Breyer, Officer Tamagawa, and Officer Snyder,
there are three individuals who are alive today," said Kauai Police Acting Chief Michael
Contrades. "I commend and thank these men for demonstrating excellent judgement,
outstanding dedication, and genuine compassion for our community members. Their efforts
reflect their true commitment, on and off duty, to keep our community safe."
