Class Specifications for the Class:
GOLF COURSE MAINTENANCE OPERATIONS SUPERVISOR
FII-10, BU-02
Duties Summary:
Supervises work in the operation, maintenance and repair of related mechanical
equipment for golf course operations; supervises the work in the maintenance,
beautification and improvement of golf course greens and fairways; performs other related
duties as required.
Distinguishing Characteristics:
This class is distinguished by its responsibility to supervise, plan and coordinate the
work in connection with the maintenance of golf course greens and fairways in a golf course
and to supervise, plan and coordinate the work in the operation, maintenance and repair of
related mechanical equipment in the day-to-day golf course operations.
Examples of Duties: (The following are examples of duties and are not necessarily
descriptive of any one position in this class. The omission of specific duties statements
does not preclude management from assigning such duties if such duties are a logical
assignment for the position).
• Supervises, plans, lays out, assign and reviews the work of others in caring for and
maintaining golf greens, fairways and surrounding grounds;
• Supervises, plans and assigns the work of subordinates involved in the operation,
repair and maintenance of mechanical tools and equipment;
• Inspects, determines need for and supervises seeding, sodding, watering and cutting
grass; assigns and supervises repair and construction projects to work crews;
• Inspects greens for algae, brown patch, ring patch and dollar spots;
• Supervises the mixing of chemicals to control turf diseases and supervises work
crews applying them to the greens;
• Determines and supervises the application of the proper amounts of fertilizer to be
used on golf course greens and fairways;

Supervisor
• Oversees and ensures the proper operation of trucks and maintenance equipment,
including tractors, loaders, mowers and other golf course equipment; and
• Responsible for and supervises the maintenance of areas surrounding the golf
course and clubhouse; and
• Performs other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge of:
Standard methods, practices, tools and equipment used in developing and
maintaining greens and fairways on a golf course; basic repair and construction methods
and techniques; special grasses used on golf courses; turf diseases and fungicides and
insecticides and other chemicals used to control them; golf rules and practices as they apply
to the proper maintenance and care of greens and fairways; golf course equipment and
irrigation systems; principles and practices of supervision.
Ability to:
Plan, lay out, assign and review the work of others; make estimates of the time, cost
of materials and labor for repair and construction projects; mix chemicals to control turf
diseases; determine the correct application of fertilizers; give and follow written instructions;
keep pertinent records; deal tactfully and effectively with the general public and fellow
employees.

OPERATIONS SUPERVISOR.

Minimum Qualification Requirements for the Class:
GOLF COURSE MAINTENANCE OPERATIONS SUPERVISOR
FII-10, BU-02
Training and Experience:
A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to completion of
high school and:
• five (5) years of golf course grounds maintenance experience, which must
have involved:
o two (2) years of golf course construction and landscaping experience,
including experience in the repair, maintenance and installation of
pipelines and hardware of an irrigation system and repairs on
automotive and/or mechanical equipment; and
o two (2) years in a supervisory capacity.
Supervisory Experience:
Supervisory experience over unskilled and semi-skilled workers or equipment
operators which included 1) planning, organizing, scheduling, and directing their work; 2)
assigning and reviewing the work of subordinates; 3) advising them on difficult work
problems; 4) enforcing safety rules and practices; 5) training and developing subordinates;
and 6) evaluating their work performance.
Quality of Experience
Possession of the required number of years of experience will not in itself be
accepted as proof of qualification for a position. The applicant’s overall experience must
have been of such scope and level of responsibility as to conclusively demonstrate that
he/she has the ability to perform the duties of the position for which he/she is being
considered.
License Requirement
Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license (Hawai‘i Type 3 or equivalent)
as applicable to the position.
Selective Certification
Specialized knowledge, skills and abilities may be required to perform the duties of
some positions. For such positions, Selective Certification Requirements may be established
and certification may be restricted to eligibles who possess the pertinent experience and/or
training required to perform the duties of the position.

Supervisor
Agencies requesting selective certification must show the connection between the
kind of training and/or experience on which they wish to base selective certification and the
duties of the position to be filled.
Tests
Applicants may be required to qualify on an appropriate examination.
Health and Physical Condition Requirements:
Persons seeking appointment to positions in this class must meet the health and
physical condition standards deemed necessary and proper for performance of the duties.
