Class Specifications for the Class:
POLICE EQUIPMENT MAINTENANCE COORDINATOR
SR-18; BU-03
Duties Summary:
Develops and coordinates a planned maintenance and inspection program of all
police department equipment including departmental fleet vehicles, firearms, radio
communication equipment and other personal safety equipment; inspects all departmental
vehicles to determine possible cause(s) of accidents; maintains an effective purchasing and
inventory control system; prepares plans and specifications for new equipment purchases;
and performs other related duties as required.
Distinguishing Characteristics:
This class is distinguished by its responsibility for developing and implementing a
planned maintenance and inspectional program for a variety of Police equipment including
fleet vehicles, radio communication equipment, and firearms for the Kaua‘i Police
Department.
Examples of Duties: (The following are examples of duties and are not necessarily
descriptive of any one position in this class. The omission of specific duties statements
does not preclude management from assigning such duties if such duties are a logical
assignment for the position.)
• Plans and coordinates a preventative maintenance program for all police equipment
including fleet vehicles and firearms;
• Coordinates activities relating to the servicing, repairing, overhauling, testing and
replacement of police vehicles;
• Reviews and estimates the cost of maintenance and repair requests;
• Requisitions, stores and issues equipment utilized by employees of the department;
• Inspects equipment and road tests police vehicles to determine the nature and
extent of damages, the need and costs of repairs, and the quality of repair work
performed on police vehicles;
• Reviews equipment use and repair records;
• Makes recommendations for new and additional equipment;
• Responsible for departmental storekeeping functions;

Coordinator
• Assists in the conduct of informal bid purchases of materials, supplies and services
required in repair and maintenance activities;
• Prepares plans and specifications for new police vehicles and equipment purchases;
• Develops and maintains standards and specifications for a variety of materials,
supplies, equipment and services involved in police protection activities;
• Conducts and audits physical inventory for the department;
• Assists in coordinating the maintenance and repair of the department's radio -
telephone communication equipment;
• Makes periodic visitations to all district substations to inspect police buildings and
equipment to determine repair needs;
• Develops maintenance and replacement schedules and provides technical
justification for the purchase of new equipment;
• Provides cost data in preparation of repair and maintenance budget;
• Participates in developing the expenditure plan and schedule of maintenance
projects;
• Conducts safety inspections and investigates accidents involving police vehicles as
they pertain to equipment malfunction and/or failure;
• May conduct safety training and education activities;
• May assist trained police personnel inspect and care for departmental firearms and
related equipment; and
• Performs other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge of:
Automotive repair work; operation and care of police equipment; purchasing,
storekeeping and inventory control principles and practices; office and recordkeeping
practices and procedures; filing and report writing techniques.

Coordinator
Ability to:
Coordinate equipment maintenance program; inspect and coordinate the work of
others; communicate clearly orally and in writing; evaluate operational requirements and
recommend improvements thereto; prepare clear and concise reports; maintain effective
relationships with others; keep accurate records.
This is an amendment to the specification for the class POLICE EQUIPMENT
MAINTENANCE COORDINATOR, which was approved on December 30, 1985, and is
to be substituted for that specification.

Minimum Qualification Specifications
For the Class:
POLICE EQUIPMENT MAINTENANCE COORDINATOR
SR-18; BU-03
Training and Experience:
A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to graduation
from high school; and
•four (4) years of experience in inspecting and supervising automotive repair
work involving the planning, coordinating, purchasing and inventory control of
supplies and parts, and estimating the costs of labor and materials for
automotive repair and maintenance activities.
Substitutions Allowed:
The following may be substituted for education:
A.Four (4) years of full-time work experience may be substituted for a high
school diploma or equivalent.
B.Associate’s, Bachelor’s or Master’s degree from an accredited community
college, college or university, trades school, etc., may be substituted for a
high school diploma or equivalent.
Quality of Experience:
Possession of the required number of years of experience will not in itself be
accepted as proof of qualifications for a position. The applicant’s overall experience must
have been of such scope and level of responsibility as to conclusively demonstrate that
he/she has the ability to perform the duties of the position for which he/she is being
considered.
License Requirement:
Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license (Hawai‘i Type 3 or equivalent)
and the appropriate licenses or certificates as required of the position.
Selective Certification:
Specialized knowledge, skills and abilities may be required to perform the duties of
some positions. For such positions, Selective Certification Requirements may be
established, and certification may be restricted to eligibles who possess the pertinent
experience and/or training required to perform the duties of the position.
Agencies requesting Selective Certification must show the connection between the
kind of training and/or experience on which they wish to base selective certification and the
duties of the position to be filled.

Tests:
Applicants may be required to qualify on an appropriate examination.
Health and Physical Condition:
Persons seeking appointment to positions in this class must meet the health and
physical condition standards deemed necessary and proper to perform the essential
functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodations.
Physical Effort Grouping: Light
This is an amendment to the specification for the class POLICE EQUIPMENT
MAINTENANCE COORDINATOR, which was approved on December 30, 1985, and is
to be substituted for that specification.
