Class Specifications for the Class:
BRIDGE MAINTENANCE WORKER I
BC-11, BU-01
Duties Summary:
Performs work in the general maintenance, repair and up-keep of structural steel,
composite concrete and steel, reinforced concrete and timber highway bridges, overpasses
and similar structures; and performs other related duties as required.
Distinguishing Characteristics:
This class is distinguished by its responsibility for the performance of repair and
maintenance tasks to bridges. It differs from the Bridge Maintenance Worker II class in that
the Bridge Maintenance Worker I class is the journey-level class and performs work in the
repair and maintenance of highway structures such as bridges and overpasses as members
of a Bridge Maintenance crew; whereas, the Bridge Maintenance Worker II class spends a
majority of the work time in performing bridge maintenance work and, in addition supervises
bridge maintenance crew members in the repair and maintenance of highway structures
such as bridges and overpasses.
Examples of Duties: (The following are examples of duties and are not necessarily
descriptive of any one position in this class. The omission of specific duties statements does
not preclude management from assigning such duties if such duties are a logical
assignment for the position).
• Makes routine inspections of structural steel, composite concrete and steel,
reinforced concrete and timber highway bridges to locate rust and corrosion, and
locates damage caused by falling rocks, termites, dry rot, water and salt spray;
• Hooks up tackle on overhead track boards; moves scaffolding to the area where work
is being done on bridge members; chips, scrapes, wire brushes or sand blasts
structural steel bridge members and prepares surface for repainting;
• Applies red oxide and/or other anti-corrosive or rust preventive formulas or paints
with both brush and spray gun;
• Occasionally uses oxyacetylene cutting torch and cuts and removes bridge faulty
members and fits and secures new bridge members by riveting or welding;
• Removes and replaces timber bridge members, decking and railings;

• Repairs damaged concrete and masonry bridge footings and wing, retaining and
rubble walls;
• May operate a motor vehicle and/or flat-bed truck to transport work crew, material,
equipment and tools to and from worksites;
• May paint, repaint, maintain and erect regulatory, warning and directional highway
signs and pavement markings;
• May repair guard rails, catch basins and cement walks; and
• Performs other related duties as required.
Knowledge of:
Common practices, methods, materials and tools used in construction and
maintenance work; hazards and safety precautions necessary in working at great heights.
Ability to:
Use common tools and techniques of the several trades such as painting, rigging,
steel work and carpentry; give and receive both oral and written instructions.
This is amendment to the specification for the class BRIDGE MAINTENANCE WORKER which
was approved on September 6, 1974, amended on October 30, 1990, and retitled and
amended to BRIDGE MAINTENANCE WORKER I on January 24, 2013, and is to be
substituted for that specification.

Minimum Qualification Specifications
for the Class:
BRIDGE MAINTENANCE WORKER I
BC-11, BU-01
Training & Experience:
A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to graduation
from high school, and
• three (3) years of journey level work experience in the following skilled trades:
carpentry, cement finishing, masonry, ironworking, welding or painting.
Substitutions Allowed:
The following may be substituted for education:
A. Four (4) years of full time general work experience may be substituted for a high
school diploma.
B. An Associate’s, Bachelor’s or Master’s degree from an accredited community college,
college or university, trades school, etc., may be substituted for a high school
diploma or equivalent.
The following may be substituted for experience:
A. Completion of an apprenticeship program in either carpentry, cement finishing,
masonry, ironworking, welding or painting may be substituted for the three (3) years
of journey level work experience in the following skilled trades: carpentry, cement
finishing, masonry, ironworking, welding or painting.
B. An Associate’s degree from an accredited community college, or university in
carpentry, cement finishing, masonry, ironworking, welding or painting, may be
substituted for the two (2) years of journey level work experience in the following
skilled trades: carpentry, cement finishing, masonry, ironworking, welding or
painting.
If a degree is used to substitute for the education requirement, it may not be used
again towards the experience requirement. If work experience is used to substitute for
education, it may not be used again to meet the experience requirement. Substitutions will
be used to the advantage of the applicant.

Quality of Experience:
Possession of the required number of years of experience will not in itself be
accepted as proof of qualification for a position. The applicant's overall experience must
have been of such scope and level of responsibility as to conclusively demonstrate that
he/she has the ability to perform the duties of the position for which he/she is being
considered.
License Requirement:
Possession of the appropriate licenses or certificates as required of the position.
Selective Certification:
Specialized knowledge, skills and abilities may be required to perform the duties of
some positions. For such positions, Selective Certification Requirements may be established
and certification may be restricted to eligibles who possess the pertinent experience and/or
training required to perform the duties of the position.
Agencies requesting Selective Certification must show the connection between the
kind of training and/or experience on which they wish to base selective certification and the
duties of the position to be filled.
Tests:
Applicants may be required to qualify on an appropriate examination.
Health and Physical Condition Requirements:
Persons seeking appointment to positions in this class must meet the health and
physical condition standards deemed necessary and proper to perform the essential
functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodations.
Physical Effort Grouping: Heavy
This is amendment to the specification for the class BRIDGE MAINTENANCE WORKER
which was approved on September 6, 1974, amended on October 30, 1990, and retitled
and amended to BRIDGE MAINTENANCE WORKER Ion January 24, 2013, and is to be
substituted for that specification.
