HomeMy WebLinkAbout8.663 BRIDGE MAINTENANCE WORKER II 20210408PART I DEPARTMENT OF HUMAN RESOURCES COUNTY OF KAUAI 8.663 Class Specifications for the Class: BRIDGE MAINTENANCE WORKER II WS-11, BU-01 Duties Summary: Supervises and participates in the performing of work in the general maintenance, repair and up-keep of structural steel, composite concrete and steel, reinforced concrete and timber highway bridges, overpasses and similar structures; and performs other related duties as required. Distinguishing Characteristics: The Bridge Maintenance Worker II class is distinguished by its responsibility to supervise and participate in the work, repair and maintenance of highway structures such as bridges and overpasses. A position in this class supervises and participates in general maintenance, repair, and upkeep of structural steel, composite concrete and steel, reinforced concrete, and timber highway bridges and similar structures. Whereas the Bridge Maintenance Worker I class performs work in the repair and maintenance of highway structures such as bridges and overpasses as part of a bridge maintenance crew. Examples of Duties: (The following are examples of duties and are not necessarily descriptive of any one position in this class. The omission of specific duties statements does not preclude management from assigning such duties if such duties are a logical assignment for the position). • Plans, lays out, assigns and participates in routine inspections of structural steel, composite concrete and steel, reinforced concrete and timber highway bridges to locate rust, corrosion and locate damages caused by falling rocks, traffic, termites, dry rot, salt spray and water; • Supervises and participates in erecting and taking down scaffolds and ladders; • Supervises and participates in chipping, scrapping, wire brushing or sand blasting structural steel bridge members and preparing surface for repainting; • Applies primer and/or other anti-corrosive or rust preventative formulas or paints with both brush and spray gun; PART I BRIDGE MAINTENANCE WORKER II 2 8.663 • Supervises and participates in laying out all welding and riveting work in connection with the repair or replacement of damaged steel bridge members and removing and replacing timber bridge members, decking and railings; • May supervise and participate in painting, repainting, maintaining and erecting regulatory, warning and directional highway signs and pavement markings, repair guardrails, catch basins, cement walks, etc.; • Supervises and participates in repairing damaged concrete and masonry bridge footings and wing, retaining and rubble walls both above and below water level; • Reviews and evaluates the work of subordinates; • Prepares and submits daily maintenance reports and checks safety practices of members of the bridge maintenance work crew; and • Performs other related duties as required. Knowledge of: Practices, methods, materials and tools used in bridge inspectional and maintenance work; steel welding and cutting equipment and its use; mixing and applying different types of paints to steel, concrete and wooden surfaces and methods and materials used to prepare such surfaces for painting; techniques of rigging, scaffolds, and other such equipment; hazards and safety precautions necessary in working at heights in excess of 70 feet; hazards and safety precautions necessary for those positions that perform work under water. Ability to: Lay out, assign, review and evaluate the work of Bridge Maintenance Workers; use common tools and techniques of the trades such as painting, rigging, cutting and welding, steel work and carpentry; give and receive oral and written instructions; prepare maintenance reports; work safely at heights; perform lifting, carrying and moving of heavy objects typical of the work of the class; and, for positions that perform work underwater, dive and swim. PART I BRIDGE MAINTENANCE WORKER II 3 8.663 This is amendment to the specification for the class BRIDGE MAINTENANCE WORKER II which was approved on January 24, 2013 and is to be substituted for that specification. ANDERSON Director of Human Resources PART II DEPARTMENT OF HUMAN RESOURCES COUNTY OF KAUAI 8.663 Minimum Qualification Specifications for the Class: BRIDGE MAINTENANCE WORKER II WS-11, BU-01 Training & Experience: A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to graduation from high school, and • four (4) years of journey level work experience in the following skilled trades: carpentry, cement finishing, masonry, ironworking, welding or painting; and • one (1) year of experience in bridge maintenance work. Substitutions Allowed: The following may be substituted for education: A. Four (4) years of full time general work experience may be substituted for a high school diploma. B. An Associate’s, Bachelor’s or Master’s degree from an accredited community college, college or university, trades school, etc., may be substituted for a high school diploma or equivalent. The following may be substituted for experience: A. Completion of an apprenticeship program in either carpentry, cement finishing, masonry, ironworking, welding or painting may be substituted for the three (3) years of journey level work experience in the following skilled trades: carpentry, cement finishing, masonry, ironworking, welding or painting. B. An Associate’s degree from an accredited community college, or university in carpentry, cement finishing, masonry, ironworking, welding or painting, may be substituted for the two (2) years of journey level work experience in the following skilled trades: carpentry, cement finishing, masonry, ironworking, welding or painting. If a degree is used to substitute for the education requirement, it may not be used again towards the experience requirement. If work experience is used to substitute for education, it may not be used again to meet the experience requirement. Substitutions will be used to the advantage of the applicant. PART II BRIDGE MAINTENANCE WORKER II 2 8.663 Quality of Experience: Possession of the required number of years of experience will not in itself be accepted as proof of qualification for a position. The applicant's overall experience must have been of such scope and level of responsibility as to conclusively demonstrate that he/she has the ability to perform the duties of the position for which he/she is being considered. License Requirement: Possession of the appropriate licenses or certificates as required of the position. Selective Certification: Specialized knowledge, skills and abilities may be required to perform the duties of some positions. For such positions, Selective Certification Requirements may be established and certification may be restricted to eligibles who possess the pertinent experience and/or training required to perform the duties of the position. Agencies requesting Selective Certification must show the connection between the kind of training and/or experience on which they wish to base selective certification and the duties of the position to be filled. Tests: Applicants may be required to qualify on an appropriate examination. Health and Physical Condition Requirements: Persons seeking appointment to positions in this class must meet the health and physical condition standards deemed necessary and proper to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodations. Physical Effort Grouping: Heavy This is amendment to the specification for the class BRIDGE MAINTENANCE WORKER II which was approved on January 24, 2013 and is to be substituted for that specification.
